SMR

The SMR revision stem for the hip is a modular system designed for hip resurfacing in cases of severe bone loss (type II, III and IV Società Italiana di Riprotesizzazione G.I.R. classification and type II and III Paprosky classification).

With more than 20 years of clinical history, the femoral implant consists of three elements:

  • a proximal component;
  • a distal component;
  • a locking screw.

The SMR stem allows customized reconstructions thanks to the wide range of modular combinations of proximal and distal components.

Materials

Titanium alloy Ti 6Al 4V ELI, which guarantees excellent biocompatibility and mechanical resistance. The surface finish is obtained by abrasion with corundum granules that increase the contact surface and facilitate prosthesis-bone anchoring.

Proximal Component

The modular proximal component solves the problems of restoring the physiological limb length and the stability of the joint thanks to the four lengths of 40, 50, 60 and 70 mm and the two CCD angles of 125° and 135°.

The mirror polishing in the neck area has been designed to reduce the wear of the polyethylene in contact with the neck during flexion. The mirror finish also eliminates the risk fatigue cracking.

Distal Component

The distal component is conical with longitudinal fins. This prosthetic design guarantees axial stability and resistance to torsional forces at the same time.

Modularity is ensured by four lengths (100, 160, 200 and 240 mm) and nine diameters (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22 and 24 mm);

The 200 and 240 mm distal components have an anatomical procurvation of 3° to avoid the tip effect on the cortical area;

Three holes are positioned radially at 120° in the distal portion to allow the possible use of cortex screws in the rare cases where they are needed (4).

SMR & SMR Resection

The distal component of the SMR Revision Stem is also used in conjunction with the proximal component of the SMR Resection Modular Stem. The surgeon therefore has the option of using cemented or uncemented distal components for both SMR and SMR Resection prostheses, with different indications.
